The Australian Crocodile

The Saltwater/Estuarine Crocodile is an apex predator which is at the top of the food chain and is the largest living Reptile in the World, residing in areas between land and river. It can live up to 100 years old. Because of its muscular tail it has a powerful ability to propel forward within the water at great speed. With this ability it can also thrust its body into the air vertically to capture a bird or any other prey in flight.

The Crocodile has excellent night vision and can see underwater because of an invisible eye lid that protects it, Crocodiles also have a keen sense of smell.

The water, sun and shade helps Crocodiles maintain their preferred temperature of between 30-33 Degrees Celsius. Their ability to maintain this temperature by using the water to cool down is imperative to their survival. They will also cool down their body by allowing air to circulate over the skin of their mouth by lying with their jaws open on the riverbanks under the shade.

At the bottom and top of their jaws are sensory buds that allow them to detect subtle vibrations within murky waters when hunting. Crocodile feed on a variety of animals such as other reptiles, mammals, birds and fish, taking advantage of feeding at any given moment that the occasion arises, with such a powerful jaw to crush down on their preys skull, it does not need to chew and swallows their food whole. But because of it’s acidic stomach it cannot digest things such as turtle shells, fur or hooves which maybe regurgitated or passed later on in the digestive process.
